- Hi everyone!
-
- Today I got some feedback (gasp!) from the mailing list that went
- something like this...
-
- >In your `ramblings' before the
- >catalogue, you comment on a few things that assume knowledge about
- >the Slow Glass ordering system and so on. People receiving the
- >catalogue for the first time (ie. me) don't have this information.
- >If you could spare the time, it would be nice to receive a paragraph
- >on what the background to Slow Glass. It may already exist in something
- >you've posted previously and you could send it to each person you add
- >to the mailing list.
-
- It appears that I have been remiss. So allow me to address the two issues
- raised above, the ordering system and the background of Slow Glass Books.
-
- Slow Glass is primarily a mail order business. The idea is that you look
- at your catalogue, decide what you want, write it all down on a piece
- of paper and mail it to Slow Glass. About a month later Justin will post
- out a parcel containing the goodies (I'll say more on turnaround time below).
- At some stage Justin will invoice you, and you send him a cheque or whatever.
-
- I'm a bit hazy on the details of exactly how the mail order system works
- because I've never actually used it. It's so much easier to call Justin
- (the number is on the catalogue) and give him the order over the phone.
- This has a few advantages:
- * It's easier to pick up the phone than write a letter.
- * You know Justin has got your order.
- * Justin can answer almost any query you have about delivery times,
- prices, or availability of titles.
-
- If you live in Melbourne, you can collect your books personally from Justin
- at a pre-arranged time. Usually he sets aside a Sunday as 'open day', when
- you can drop in at any time.
-
- The catalogues list titles that are to be published one or two months hence.
- So feel free to ask about books from previous catalogues or any other title
- you may want. Justin will make an effort to locate any tome you ask for,
- but out of print titles may take some time or be simply impossible to find
- (most of the time the amount you are willing to spend on a rare book comes
- into play).
-
-
- And now, gentle readers, prepare for the shocking, horrific tale of the
- background of Slow Glass...
-
- It's no big secret that Slow Glass Books is really one man, Justin Ackroyd.
- Justin has been a professional SF bookseller for many years now.
- Before starting his own mail order business around 2 years ago, he worked
- for Minotaur and, before that, he was involved with the now defunct
- Space Age Books. In my opinion, Justin was responsible in no small part
- for Minotaur's rapid expansion from a comic shop into the major Melbourne
- SF store that it is today.
-
- I started to procure most of my SF books via Slow Glass about 18 months ago.
- I was so impressed with the effort Justin goes to, the prices he charges
- and the personalized approach (which the mercenary Minotaur has well and truly
- lost) that two things happened:
- 1) I started spending more on books.
- 2) I started telling all my friends about Slow Glass.
-
- The idea of distributing the catalogues electronically followed close behind.
- I figured that I could do a favour to the network (and save people some money)
- and also help out a business which I respect highly.
-
- My 'ramblings' are just an attempt to provide a micro-guide to what is
- good and bad; they are by no means exhaustive or objective. A lot of people
- have trouble choosing from titles and authors they have never heard of;
- hopefully my comments help a little. If you are really interested in recent
- and upcoming titles, I suggest you ask Justin to supply you with the monthly
- _Locus_. It is *the* magazine of the industry, with news, author profiles,
- reviews and lists of what is slated for publication and when. You also
- get to see what the covers of many new titles will be like.
-
- One of the questions that people ask me a lot is where the name Slow Glass
- came from. I asked Justin once, and the answer was so pointless that I
- immediately forgot it. So don't bother asking :-)
-
-
- Hoping that I haven't bored you all to death...
-
